Lark Quarry Conservation Park, Queensland

We ended up being stranded in Winton for four or so days due to our 4WD overheating on the road and having to be towed to this lovely little outback town. Being in a remote town means you are at the mercy of a busy and overworked mechanic who needs to order parts from major towns and to fit you into his endless appointments. The mechanic’s yard in Winton resembled a graveyard of vehicles waiting to either be fixed or written off by insurance companies. Many people were staying in their caravans or 4WD vehicles, much like us hoping and waiting..

We used this time to visit the world’s only known record of a Dinosaur Stampede at Lark Quarry where up to 150 two legged dinosaur fossilised footprints were left in the clay from millions of years ago. On the way to the conservation park, I took many photographs of the outback’s warm colours that were captured in the hot afternoon sun. These photographs inspired the creation of this painting.
