Sunday Market Flowers is a painting inspired by flowers we bought at the Bendigo Showgrounds market, which we visit most Sunday mornings. The market has become part of the rhythm of our week, a familiar place where looking, wandering, and small discoveries are as important as the things we bring home.
What I enjoy most about the market is its mix of second-hand furniture, old household items, and small trinkets, often sold at very reasonable prices. There is a sense of history and usefulness in these objects that you don’t find in homewares stores.
Buying flowers or produce directly from stallholders also feels meaningful. Many stallholders come from farms in central Victoria or from people growing vegetables in their own backyards. Thankfully cash is still the main form of transactions as it supports small-scale sellers, keeps transactions simple, and reinforces the direct exchange between buyer and grower in a way that large retailers do not.
The flower arrangement in Sunday Market Flowers was added to using lilac flowers from our home, planted years ago by my husband’s grandmother and including them connects them to family and place.
